Stuart Dougles can run and jump

"We also have a fantastic relationship with some terrific riders currrently assets of some of the other clubs - Ed Kennett, Rory Schlein, Lewis Bridger...". i.e. these are who I plan to wave my chequebook at this winter.

This was in his programe notes for there meeting last night. Is it a wonder that some of our fans boo him when he is at our place.

Judging by the title he is fitter than me  Laughing

Well it would seem that Mr Douglas can teach us a thing or two about class, and that remark just about sums him up. His attitude is reminiscant of the Harry Enfield character.. Loadsamoney. Yet another east-end barraboy made good. Who knows, one day he may even apply to be Chairman of the BSPA following in the footsteps of yet another.....yes you guessed it...... east end barra boy with more than a passing affiliation to The Hammers.

So another "barrowboy" is going to throw his money around.  Mad I hope BD does not let Bridger or Kennett go, and Schlein is a Coventry asset. Why do some of these people think money buys loyalty, but unfortunately with some people it does. The BSPA MUST PUT A STOP TO THIS. If not I can see there might only be two or three clubs who can afford to keep going, and this could be the death knell of speedway in this country.  Crying or Very sad The BSPA must sort out how much points money a rider is paid, and their must be ceiling on any retainers/expenses. All clubs must adhere to it, if not it must be made clear that there are penalties. We have seen what has happened in football. Do we want only a few clubs to survive. Question

I take it your not including Manchester City in that,as both a football fan and speedway fan I would add that football is in a far better condition than speedway. Most Staduims even non league have better facilities than some Elite Stadiums I think speedway should adopt some of Footballs princibles especially in Marketing, Advertising, and in getting a fair percentage of revenue out of the Satellite companies. Again bring in sensible rules, not tactical rides Golden Doubles, the Joker in World Cups Do away with assets, sign riders on contracts for agreed periods. Averages to be as the previous seasons winning top side.No guests have some form of squad system etc Another thing football club admissions on average  in the premiership for bog standard seat £40-50 about 50p per minute Speedway £15 (mostly standing) for 15 minutes racing. theres no inducement to encourage families. In our carpark on race nights 60% of the cars in there came with one person in them not many families we need to encourage them.Getting back to Douglas I would be surprised to see some off our favorites not here next season, James, Lee, Eddie, Cameron possibly Scott all gone. After all there has to be some changes this team including Trevor didnt quite meet expectations. Hope Bob is successful with his propsed talks next week with possible co promoters. just hope they are sussex born sheikhs Wink

Or Little & Large. You need a sense of humour at our place.

Hi Parker, As you can guess I am not a football fan. I meant that the clubs that have rich owners can afford to pay above the odds. We have seen some football clubs go into administration because they pay out more than they get in, and now with the economic climate some of the sponsors are in trouble.  Exclamation I would not like to see speedway go that way, but with moneyed people coming into the sport, this is something that must be watched. They must not be aloud to pay some riders over the odds. Their should be a sliding scale, i.e. top riders are worth more and so on down the scale. Perhaps their could be a renumeration  at the end of the season for the League/playoff winners. Question  Wink

Don't even jest Exclamation  The obvious ones would be the 2 from Reading as they don't have a club next year but who knows in the crazy world of speedway Confused

My only observation over Douglas's sordid comments are, this is tantamount to tapping riders up who are currently contracted elsewhere. Its rife in football and its one part of football I do not want in this sport. Like I said before, Douglas has really bought a complete new angle on class with those remarks.  Its clear to me that the Hammers do not have the infrastructure in place to build a team so they wave their cheque book at us, take a look at the ex eagles on their staff books.....then draw your own conclusions.

It puzzles me when people get so upset that "people with money" come into speedway.  I would have thought that speedway desperately needs investment. Yet those who come in seem to get tagged with epithets like Barrow boy made good.  What on earth is wrong with making good.  More often than not such people provide employment for those who, for whatever reason, do not set up on their own.  Why do we have such a down on people who make good.  And why must we keep them out of the raggle taggle  down at heel shambles that is present day speedway.  Truly the politics of envy still has a place in this country.
GazzaH

I am all for people with money coming in Emjay, lets not forget the Dugards have provided us with speedway for countless years with their wealth keeping the sport going. And dont forget they started off at the bottom and look where they are now. It aint envy with me, but I have a profound dislike for those that wave a cheque under the noses of people (in this case riders getting tapped up) thinking it will get them what they want. Invariably it does as people are weak where the filthy lucre is concerned. With me I see it for what it is, and the good people of Essex are welcome to the likes of Mr Douglas if he provides them with employment and entertainment........but I see the likes of him day in and day out whilst working up in London.... most of them are charlletons to a man.
