From the Poole website :-

Kus is Coming

21 year old Czech International Matej Kus is one of the new faces that Pirates fans can cheer on when the club are involved in some end of season challenges against Eastbourne and Ipswich next month.

The original idea of a mini-league concept has not come to fruition and so the Pirates will be pitched against the Witches in the Coastal Windows Trophy and the Eagles in the Drapers Tool Trophy.

Kus, who has had experience of British racing having been a member of the Berwick Bandits side in 2007 and he made newspaper headlines when recovering from unconsciousness after a track crash. Kus, 18 at the time, woke and astonished the medical crew as he began talking in fluent English rather than the broken English he had been getting by on before the crash.
Kus, who scored 2 points for his country in this season's SWC round in Vojens, is one of a number of young riders that Poole boss Matt Ford has been following with interest, and he told www.poolespeedway.net "When we had the early season news about Jason (Doyle) and Kyle (Legault) being long term absentees I contacted Matej with a view to bringing him in for the season but he couldn't commit for a full term at that stage so we put the arrangement on ice at that time and Matej is certainly keen to come back to ride in Britain this year. Our matches against Ipswich and Eastbourne provides an ideal platform for us to give Matej a trial and I am pushing hard on trying to sort out formalities with a couple of other promising youngsters as well."
It is well known that father-to-be Bjarne Pedersen will step down from these meetings and spend more time looking after his partner Lone ahead of the birth of their child due on October 9th but it remains to be seen which of the other current crop of Pirates may step aside to allow the Poole management the opportunity to trial some new faces for prospective 2010 contracts.

Great news as I can't be there for the Ippo meeting Very Happy  I haven't seen my last speedway yet!

According to other side:

Unfortunately not a three team event, but two, us & Poole, home & away, called The Sun Trap Trophy
Us on the 10th, Poole's leg on the Wed 14th

Any further news will be reported here

The Sun Trap Trophy  Exclamation  Fingers crossed it doesn't rain! Laughing

How about the powers that be trying to get Nicki P as a guest for this meeting.  It would raise the profile as he is still the current world champion, and maybe would help to attract someone to promote next year.
sussexbulldog

Good idea.  It would fall in line with the blueprint  Cool
ComeOnYouSpurs

It would be great to see Nicki back in an Eagles suit.... and would really make the meeting an attractive proposition.

It would also be nice to have a proper no.1 instead of the poor excuse for one that we've had over the last few weeks.
ray

totally agree , especially a true number one eagle , even for one match only , not a failed number one that we would not travel to see . be a BIG crowd for that one , waata way to go out , wow  Idea  Idea  Idea
emjay

Agree it would be nice to see Pedersen back.  It is about the only thing that would lure me to an otherwise pointless meeting.  But I guess it isn't going to  happen.  And the Aussies (if they have any sense) will have fled the oncoming English winter by then.  So the teams will be patched up a bit.  No thanks.  For me, season 2009 is dead, buried and best forgotten.  I'm far more interested in how the BSPA plan to cope with 2010.  Sadly, I doubt if their plans will include Eastbourne, and frankly, I doubt if they care very much.  Why oh why is it that so many sports seem to be run and administered by total incompetents.  Governments too.  Oops, sorry for the rant guys.  Got a bit carried away -again!.
Kopster

Yes it would be nice to see Nicki P back in an Eagles suit but as it been said it will never happen. I mite be going to this meeting depending if I can find the funds for it. If this is going to be our last year then it sad to go out with a bad season and this is our 80th too which is sad.

I just think that this would show potential interested parties that Eastbourne can (still) attract top riders. Nicki has always said he enjoys riding the track at Arlington, so what have we/they got to lose?
I'm no expert on  marketing or promotion but I'm convinced he would add  enough paying customers to cover the cost of his fee.
ComeOnYouSpurs

Any news on line-ups yet?

Surely they've got to do something out of the ordinary to make this a worthwhile and attractive proposition.

I'm not sure that I'd be making the journey just to watch the usual suspects in a meaningless meeting... especially if a certain Mr Watt is still wearing our no.1 race suit.
sussexbulldog

According to the other side Poole are using this to try out new riders without signing them.

Does not sound very spectacular but I shall still be there.
ray

think emjay , as usual , is right . if " they " make no effort to have it special then many of us will not bother . gotta be worth the time , journey and cost . think cam will be on his way back to oz so simon and lukas , maybe ricky too , are worth it --- but poole team will be a shadow . intrest now is in what , hopefully , may be happening next season . but as others post---- nicky would get me there too .
sussexbulldog

Bob agreed to this fixture to see what support there will be for next year.  To me that means if you want speedway next year be there for whatever is on offer.  It will be the riders' end of term speeches in any event and may be the last chance to meet old friends.

On that basis I am going to be there.

I'd go with that point of view but if the offer isnt that great then only the diehard fans will turn out. And who could blame the rest, best thing would be if its is weakened teams is reduce the admission charge

think you have a valid point about the attendance from the posts so far parker  Rolling Eyes

Both myself and my husband will be their. If BD is using this to gauge whether supporters want speedway next year, then I suggest the fans go. If new promoters want to see what the support is like, and it is not a good crowd, then we could be up the swanee. Exclamation

when fans literally live around the corner  the time , trouble and expense are different, if many of us did we would be there too. appreciate a large crowd could possibly attract a new promoter , he would have been best to have attended when eagles had a full team against ipswich . anyway , waiting to see who is riding for both teams . the attendance will be intresting to see , doubtless parker will advise us  Cool
sussexbulldog

Take your point Ray but if this is make or break time would you not agree that anyone should make it if they possibly can ? After a long day working in Eastbourne after getting up at 5.00 am it is tempting to go home without going to Arlington but I will be there.

I get your point Aussie and I will be there but its almost Blackmail, if you dont support us etc, but people will not turn out for an sub standard meeting after all they havent turned out in force all season when it was league meetings.
You live locally to the stadium have you seen anything promoting this meeting.I would love nothing more to see speedway at Arlington next season and I know that all the real supporters will be there but again if theres been no promoting by management whats the chances of a big crowd.
ray

agree , no blackmail or soft-soap will work  for most, promote the meeting and then we can decide . as for " if ", we have been using that word all season . c'mon management , sell the meeting to us .if there is a financial loss for you at least it should be the last time . make it a winner like the ippo match , it's up to you .at this time it would seem to be an end of the season friendly with weakened teams . Sophies Mate

I also live locally - 4 miles from the track, and the only times the club gets promoted is the write ups in the local paper and the tie in that they have with Eastbourne Borough Football club as they donate 2 tickets in the raffle at the football and vice versa. Back in July I was on a VIP trip to the Coventry meeting as the company I work for bought a large machine from Dugards and we were given 30 free tickets and approx 8 people in our group all Eastbourne born and bred had never been or really knew about the speedway but I have to add 3 of them have attended a few meetings since as they enjoyed it so much.

I disagree with you ray, this is the sort of attitude that has pervaded all season. A TRUE supporter makes the effort to go, even if the results are not what we want, and perhaps the tactics that are employed we disagree with. Many of you want speedway to continue at Arlington in 2010, but the support from many have been non-existent. I understand that perhaps some who have lost jobs cannot get to every meeting, but some do come as much as they can. So we did not win the league or the cup, but we DID NOT FINISH BOTTOM. Cool  I may only live a few minutes away now, but in the old days we use to travel further than you did. Wink
Thats a bit over the top Aussie some supporters cannot afford to attend regularly doesnt make them any less a true supporter. Do you go home and away? if you dont does that make you any the less a true supporter. What if a family member is unwell as was Rays for a while and needed to have his support because he stayed with her does that make him any less a true supporter. I remember a few seasons ago when BD cut the season ticket discount for OAPS you went ballistic although I agreed with you  wouldnt a true supporter have been prepared to pay that little bit extra for their club Wink

You don't need to arrange an extra fixture to gauge the support for next year surely? You have all of the attendance figures from this season already and previous seasons to know who goes.

In fact I'm surprised this fixture was arranged at all. It's turning wetter and colder now and weeks after the last fixture. Wasn't it Trevor Geer's idea as well? Rolling Eyes

Here we are the seasons ended 7 days away from the meeting and the only home rider announced (according to "the other side ") is Robin Aspergen a 24 year old Swede who rides for Elit Vetlanda in the  Allsvenskan League in Sweden which is about our Premier League standard.

To the likes of Aussie2 who think that those like me and Ray should make the 2 hour plus trip regardless of whatever tripe is served up....

I'm afraid that despite the blackmail and threats about next year people will not come to Arlington to watch a sub standard meeting full of guests and unheard of riders.... specially if they still intend to charge full price.

2 or 3 of us from this website who may or may not turn up wont make tuppence worth of difference one way or the other.

Make it an attractive worthwhile meeting with a couple of star names and some decent promotion and the people will make the effort to come.

But it dont look like that's what's gonna be on offer!

Not a bad lineup.  Cool

well we have been told by BD that bridger was promised a transfer next season , and got an amazing deal financially . so thoughts of him being with eagles are not worth harbouring . his polish sponsors and bridger racing here want him to concentrate on poland . so that is where his future would seem to lie . this would be likely true even if eagles are in elite in 2010 . would much prefer nicky , but that is pie in the sky too . but nicky has always considered eagles and has never let us down , so at least he is worth fantasising about . kennett was wanting away , but can understand young riders wanting to move on , get wider experience and progress with their careers . but if it was not for eagles they would never have had such careers in the first place .await november , then maybe we can think about an eagles team in another division . if no elite , it is that or nuthin' . agree completely if we do return to elite we should start with simon and lukas first . Partly true...
BD said he wouldn't stand in his way if he still wanted a move next season. Lewis said a few weeks ago if he gets the rides he wants in Sweden and Poland he wouldn't feel the need to move to a 'big track' and would be happy to stay.

Robin Aspegren rides for Vetlanda, who are in the Swedish Elite league. They lost in the play- off semi-final mainly because of Jason Crumps injury. Robin also doubled down and rode for Valsarna in the Allsvenskan  league, a league at least on a par with our premier league, some would say its an even higher standard than our premier league. As you all probably know, Robin was part of Valsarnas triumphant table topping and play-off winning team.  Next year will see Valsarna riding against Vetlanda in the Elite league, but who will Robin be riding for?

Official press release

The Eastbourne Eagles roll out the red carpet at Arlington stadium one final time in season 2009 this coming Saturday evening (7.30 p.m. start time) as they finish the campaign just as they had started it with a visit from long time rivals from down the South Coast, the Poole Pirates.

Of course this will now offer the Sussex clubs patrons the final opportunity of seeing their heroes in action around their own circuit but furthermore, if Eastbourne’s doomsday scenario is realised and nobody steps forward to take over t he promotional reins from Bob Dugard, the Arlington supremo intending retirement after a virtual lifetime’s involvement with the Eagles, this could also prove the club’s swansong. The message is therefore clear, come and get it while you can.

The two teams, both of whom would no doubt claim to have suffered disappointing seasons bearing in mind past successes but undoubtedly each will be keen to end the year on a high and victory over the other in the two legged Draper Tools Trophy would surely raise dampened spirits.

Despite the uncertainty that currently envelopes the clubs future, Dugard is still intent on putting a plan in place for 2010 and with the Poole mindset also being one focussed upon tomorrow, supporters of both the Eagles and the Pirates should expect unfamiliar faces in the respective line ups.

Eastbourne will be tracking Ales Dryml as a guest replacement for the absent Davey Watt while also offering a run out to 20 year old Swede Robin Aspegren who forms a reserve partnership with fellow Countryman Ricky Kling.

For the Pirates, experienced Dane Hans Andersen, who’s mid season inclusion in the Dorset outfits septet ruffled feathers throughout Elite League circles, will lead the charge but with forward thinking more their watch word the visitors also include highly rated Polish duo Dawid Lampart and Artur Mroczka in the lower order of their side.
Both men, each of whom are 19-years of age, come with the highest recommendation from their home country but further to that the results are already there to see. Lampart and Mroczka have both tasted success on the World stage with vital performances in both the Polish under 19 and under 21 teams. In addition, Mroczka can also claim victory in both the individual under-19 European Championship and the Polish Bronze (U-19) helmet, his successes in each event coming in season 2008.
Another welcome returnee to the Poole line up is that of Magnus Zetterstrom, who of course proved an integral member of the Pirates septet as they lifted the Elite League title last term. The highly experienced Swede steps back into the Wimborne Road line up as a late season replacement for Dane Bjarne Pedersen and undoubtedly he will still be on a high after claiming a place in next years Grand Prix series courtesy of a commanding display, but nevertheless deserved victory in the recent Grand Prix Challenge meeting at Coventry.
With the equally experienced duo of Joe Screen, a former Eastbourne Captain of course, and Steve Johnston – a guest replacement for Czech Republican Matej Kus who returns to the Pirates fold in the return leg on Wednesday October 14th – the Eagles will once again need to be on their guard. Certainly they will want to en d the season on a high note, and one final success over the Pirates will prove just what the doctor ordered. They opened the season by claiming the Elite Shield from their great rivals before a draw in Dorset and a subsequent victory at Arlington seized the bragging rights for the Sussex side in the Elite League clashes on Good Friday.
A further 2-point victory for the Eagles at Wimborne Road somewhat spoiled the Pirates party as Andersen made his return to the fold in early June but nevertheless the last word belonged to Neil Middleditch’s men as they not only claimed the Elite League pairs title, Andersen and Chris Holder outgunning Watt and Lewis Bridger, at Arlington, but also upset the Eagles apple cart with a 48-41 win (both in August) as they endeavoured to avoid the league cellar position.
Revenge will therefore be the Eagles motivation once again as they prepare to close the doors on their eightieth season, and potentially for the final time tomorrow (Saturday) evening.

Idea
Eagle1971

The teams that are challenging for the title are always the teams that have two decent heatleaders. ie Wolves - Peter Karlsson/Freddie Lindgren & Swindon - Leigh Adams/Matej Zagar.

We always say we won't do that. Instead we will go for a more balanced team meaning we are strong at reserve.

Everybody on here says a good move that........but it isn't are we always finish the season down near the bottom. The season we won it we had Martin Dugard and Joe Screen at I & 3.

All the time we continue like this we will continue to be near the bottom and any promoter will make a loss.  Crying or Very sad
sussexbulldog

You are quite right that the last time we won the League we had two strong heat leaders but I also believe that we should leave enough margin not to end up with two 3 point reserves, unless of course they are on false averages.

Difficult decision but I feel that the crowds fell off because we did not have a big star at number 1.  That role was too much to ask of Davey Watt but if he were combined with Lee or Scott then he would do the job without all the extra pressure.

Again Lewis was given too much pressure too early. In the unlikely event that he stayed with Eastbourne you could put him as the second heat leader as it sounds like Davey is headed back to Poole anyway.
ComeOnYouSpurs

So Sussex Bulldog has heard that Watt is returning to Poole.... on a falsely low average.... thanks to his pathetic efforts for us over the latter part of the season....

Now didn't someone suggest some time ago that something a little fishy might be going on in that regard.... oh yes.... it was me!

What (Watt) a suprise!!!

If this was to be our Elite team for next season would you follow it ?

The second question is - If you were the new Promoter would you put this team out?

My answer is no because the Promoter is going to lose a lot of money with this bunch

If you take out Bridger and put either Richardson or Nicki (we can all dream)in, then this team would be pretty solid.I would certainly go to watch them. Very Happy
I would watch regardless but Aspergren? we havent a clue about him

COUS, I do admire your crystal ball (singular of course).  The government needs people like you!!

Difficult decision but I feel that the crowds fell off because we did not have a big star at number 1.  That role was too much to ask of Davey Watt but if he were combined with Lee or Scott then he would do the job without all the extra pressure.

Bridger and Gustafsson should be very good next year. You are dead right though we must have a proper number 1, someone who can win the big 13 & 15's heats at the business end of the night, especially away from home.

We need to invest in a proper 10 pt man from somewhere if we do run next year. Eagles must attract their lost fans back with a carrot.

I'm sorry but any team with 2 Dryml's will never be 'solid' Rolling Eyes  inconsistant maybe Wink

No probs was just looking for it myself! Now you mention it I do remember he did look ok I believe it was on P+P day. Most riders look good on the track on their own though so it will be interesting to see how he goes under race conditions.

Just uploaded a few more pics of him from here onwards...http://www.flickr.com/photos/2448...3530215/in/set-72157614217859423/

Certainly wasn't having a dig at you bulldog.....

If anyone deserves shooting it's a certain under performing, under prepared, under slept no.1 who conveniently dropped about a point and a half off his average this year Wink

We could all see what was happening to Watt. Just ashame that this has to come into to speedway. I hope that if Eastbourne to stay alive for many years that Watt doesn't ride for us again Evil or Very Mad . I also thought that this meeting was to pull in the crowds and a new promotor but with that line up we are not going to see many there at all. Should had brought in a proper number 1 too. Maybe we are going to be on next weeks Harry Hill's T.V Burp.
ray

agree totally kopster , watt only riding in an away leg [ he can leg it away as soon as he likes  Idea ] ideal opportunity to bring in a star guest , if it had been nicky the attendance would be wortwhile and even help defray the promotions losses not many of us would have missed that  Idea but no , no idea of promoting again . certanly it may have attracted a possible new elite promoter , if there was one , as well as fans , maybe sponsors etc , but they and us will never know that now .we are informed there is intrest in promoting eagles at a lower level , hagon tried that this year , but even as a son-in-law he was priced out . hope it is realised that this may be the only way eagles may race next year . Idea

Well said Ray

I hope that a lot of people attend tomorrow as it could be the last ever meeting at Eastbourne but more importantly a really good crowd may encourage a new promoter.
nug

Does anyone know of a promoter going tomorrow then.

What a bizaar end! what was all that about Question  Confused

Are you talking about the punch up at the end?  I believe that might have something to do with Floppys last ride and that the opportunity for pay back resulted in a team brawl (Something that doesnt happen in football Aussie Wink ) what about BD's new scheme to save the club - At the dinner dance he was approached by 8 different people each offing a £1k each to help keep the club going Bobs thought about this and if 100 did that then that would raise £100k of which £60k would be used to finance the team for next season the other £40 would be used as prize money for a raffle every home meeting for those who had paid their £1k. The top prize would be a £1K, £650second and third £350 giving those participating a chance to get their money back. It has its merits to a point where I stand I'm sure that theres 10 of us that could scape together £100each giving that little syndicate a chance of being in something like a bigger 50/50 club. My honest opinion is that we will be running again next season I think theres something going on behind the scenes to much talk about the planning etc for next season for it to end. Aslo Matt Fraud when interviewed said that there need to be big changes in the BSPA at the next AGM well we know Russell going but he did stop short at accepted that maybe the sport needed an independant body running it.
Sophies Mate

The fight was due to Lewis's Grandad Tony, it seems that Troy Batchelor had been winding Lewis up all meeting and by the end of the last race he finally snapped - have to admit he had been drinking (Tony) so that didn't help but Tony did start it and tried punching Troy but all he got was a cut above his eye which needed steri strips and probably a nice black eye. It was uncalled for and a terrible end to the last meeting. The one thing that made me laugh was Hans Anderson saying he loves these 'Friendly' matches.
ray

i'll join your syndicate parker . watta great idea  Very Happy

Good Idea - I'm in.

Woops, puts that idea well and truly into touch Rolling Eyes  Rolling Eyes

Just a thought, and no doubt "Management" have already made provision for this, presumably bridger and his retinue will be nowhere near Poole on Wednesday, with feelings as they are, coupled with the fact Ippo will be in town, it would be really rather tactless to let the various parties be within "striking" distance of each other!
