BSPA "extraordinary" meeting, Tuesday 7th April.

DaveA has just commented in a post next door that there is a meeting on this coming Tuesday.

The Kennett arbitration hearing has been deferred.

In my days on committees and being involved on boards of Governors, we only had "extraordinary" meetings when something urgent occured, particularly if it meant moving a long standing item, in this case the arbitration matter.

I sincerely hope it is nothing to do with us.

Scarey !

I have no idea what the EGM is about, but it will be something exceptionally important. That's what EGM's are for.
It might be a new Sky deal that needs ratification, however I suspect it's more likely to be a club or clubs that cannot meet their comittments to complete the season.
I fear it will be a crisis meeting of some sort. Sad

I believe it is due to low attendances more than anything and instigated by someone from the west, they will probably suggest putting the gate prices up to cover!!!

With the mindset within the BSPA, that is not an improbable idea Rolling Eyes

It seems the meeting is about a new Sky offer but that the financial crisis is likely to be discussed as well.

Argus says...............Eagles facing financial crisis
10:00am Tuesday 7th April 2009

By Brian Owen »

Eastbourne Eagles boss Bob Dugard heads to an emergency meeting of Elite League clubs today admitting: “We’ve got serious financial problems.”

Top flight tracks have been called to the get together in Rugby specifically to discuss a new TV deal.

However the question of how to cut costs or boost attendances could also arise after some clubs suffered a tough start to the season.

Eagles are losing about £7,000 per meeting and some rival tracks are thought to be faring even worse.

Dugard had warned of tough times ahead during the winter and, through The Argus, argued teams should cut their fixture list in half and only race each other once home and away.

His comments caused a storm in the world of speedway and he was fined by the governing body.

Now, after just three home meetings, Dugard admits: “Eastbourne could not see the season out with these attendances. There is no way we can sustain these losses.

“We had 919 against Belle Vue on Saturday, our crowd (of 800) against Lakeside was shocking and the Elite Shield against Poole (980) was disastrous. Poole had a very similar experience when we went over there.”

“I got fined £1,000 for saying it could be better to only run the A fixtures. People thought I was saying something terrible at the time but it was clear we were in a serious situation “We have averaged about 850 people per meeting with the exception of the Dean Barker Farewell, for which he got 1,600. That shows people will come out but we have a credit crunch and it is an international problem.”

Even speedway-mad Poland has problems as sponsors pull out.

World champion and former Eastbourne skipper Nicki Pedersen this week split with Czestochowa after they asked him to take a pay cut.

Eastbourne have home meetings with Poole on Good Friday and Lakeside a week on Saturday which would normally be decent pay days.

Dugard said: “I think the remainder of this month will be critical. A lot depends, as well, on the outcome of today’s meeting.

“Someone somewhere has got to face up to the facts. Maybe it’s different for us because we run a quite successful business away from speedway but we do that by keeping on top of what’s happening.”

However, any attempt by Dugard to cut the fixture list is likely to receive, at best, minimal support.

Eastbourne have frozen admission prices this season but received complaints for charging £1 extra to sit in the covered stand rather than stand on the terracing, much of which is uncovered.

Dugard said: “We have been charging for the stand at stock car meetings for 20 years.”

The hearing to fix a fee for Edward Kennett’s move to Coventry has been adjourned to a date to be arranged. Eagles hope to pocket £40,000 for the rider.

This has been on our front page since early this morning and makes a grim read.

If Mr BD thinks he is going to get £40K for Kennett, then he is an optimist. Let's hope he is right, because if he really is losing £7K per meeting, then he is going to need it.  But could Cov afford that sort of money in today's climate??
sussexbulldog

I have heard there is a new Sky deal which will save all the problems.

I have to say that this is not official and not in a newspaper but mentioned on another forum by someone who "speaks" to the Dugards.

I only hope that this is correct

all face mecca 5 times a day , i will even give up bacon , but my wife will never agree to wear a burkah . oh wouldn't this be wonderful , the sky decision , not the other nonsense i have written . Very Happy

Well, there may be a new Sky deal which is going to sort out all the problems, but nobody seems to be in a hurry to tell us about it. And frankly, I do not think we will hear anything.  Mr BD is telling us he is losing £7K per week.  Now wouldn't we all just love to know how that figure is arrived at.  Are we  ever going to be told?.  And are Mr BD's problems going to be magically sorted by the new Sky deal?.  Incidentally, I wonder where the rent from stock car meetings is factored into the calculations.  Maybe it is not.  But there must be income there.

well only shows how pathetic the earlier deal must have been . info was £ 1 million from sky , half to elite teams , so about £ 56,000 each . not a lot then . but again no proper explanation or breakdown . russell got quite a wedge originally as the rest of bspa got some what carried away at getting on sky sports . the rest ? good question , many of us have sought the answer , even speedway star kept their lips buttoned .
but now if BD was losing £7,000 a meeting , £ 56,000 would only scratch the surface .
but others have posted he does not have a rent to pay , all the others have . ok the location will never now attract the crowds that inner city teams have , so pehaps some balance there . but we will never know .was said this year a minimum of 1,000 as opposed to 1,500 needed last year to break even . the former must be somewhere around £ 13,000 . so needs £ 20,000 to break even .will never know how that is made up  . so what are we supposed to believe , and who ? Confused  Confused  Confused  Rolling Eyes  Question
as for extras such as rent earned from stockcars  , car park , programmes etc  ,   Question  Question  Confused  Rolling Eyes

Do you honestly believe you have a right to the answers you've asked, whats it got to do with me what pension you get ray, what your morgage is? what other income you recieve?. You can't expect answers to those questions. The sky deal, well thats another matter I expect they may have accepted it but as yet to sign.
ray

never raised the question of " rights " , you still haven't been to specsavers !! Shocked . simply pointing out some facts , some figures , and that we will never be told , so what part we may be how or why should we believe that anyway .they all spin matters their own way , this is the world we live in . we survive until the end of this season , that is what is important . Very Happy   Cool

Forgive me but are  Question  Question  not question marks, are you not asking the question Rolling Eyes
ray

of course i am curious , sometimes even nosey ,it is an unusual human being that does not experience these . sometimes i wonder about myself , but this diminishes , and usually , but certainly not always the answers are there to find . these matter , the trivial don't . Cool
emjay

Well Parker, if Mr BD now says he is losing £7K per week, after earlier saying he needed about 1000 or so spectators to break even, then something does not add up. So people like ray and myself are naturally curious.  Of course we may have no right to the answers, but it is the things Mr BD says which cause the questions.   Without some detail, it seems we can trust his figures about as much as we can trust those of the government.

Another conspiracy theory Laughing
ray

yeah , you're being fitted up ---- AGAIN  Laughing
emjay

I dont see any conspiracy. It is just that I, like many others, are sick weary and tired of being fed figures which are never validated.  Past masters at this are the government, but other institutions and companies follow suit.  We are all told, almost nightly, that this or the other  "could" happen if the present trend continues.  What a wonderful word "could" is.  When you hear "could", my friends, do not believe a word of it.  Its either sloppy research or daft extrapolation.  Try it. At a loss of £7K per week, Eagles could be heading for extinction very soon.  Aha, but if present results continue, Eagles could win the league.
ray

they call it spin , we call it lies . Sad  how can we believe anything they say . without trust , without respect there is no common ground . could say we are " browned off " Sad
