Eastbourne Eagles tonight called off the chase for Polish GP rider Grzegorz Walasek.

They have now opened talks with vastly experienced Swede Mikael Max after their bid to hire Walasek for the rest of the season hit a late hitch.

The Arlington outfit had agreed personal terms with Walasek, who turns 33 next month.

But, after further consultation with his Polish track Zielona Gora, they were unable to guarantee his services for enough meetings to make the move worthwhile.

Eagles are scouring the rider market for a signing to replace the injured David Norris.

Max, 35, originally turned them down but is now interested after his Swedish track Ikaros Smederna pulled out of the Elitserien.

Good! TBH I've never rated him and felt his signing was just for the sake of a signing. I always felt Max would be the best option by far (and probably more committed!). Everything crossed we can sign him and finally get some positive news for the Eagles fans.

also he would not have been available at home to lakeside . as lukas and simon will miss that meeting too , we would be 3 eagles short again as against peterboro .so this time will there be suitable guests as to that wolves pair were ?! .totally agree with you MrB .

Theres always some balls up when we try to sign riders think we'd cross the t's and dot the i's before announcing we'd sign someone. Thought it to good to be true when I read the article and it said "waiting for Walaseks manager to rubber stamp the deal" still thought they had to get one signing right.  Laughing

I suppose its because the BSPA run Elite League is Mickey Mouse in comparison Wink  The good news is we are revising our wanted list and in a week or so we will commence talks with Michael Max failing that is hoped that by the end of August talks with Martin Vaculik will be well in an advanced state with a possible signing by the end of September until then we will operate R/R Laughing  Laughing  Laughing
Personally I think this is just a ploy to sell more Argus's particularly as the stadium is shut for a few weeks and circulation must be dropping. Wink

Here we go again, it is becoming a farce. Seems similar  to someone who has borrowed money and is always promising that they will have the money next week but when next week arrives something else has cropped up! It reminds me of Spurs a few years ago never getting their targets and in the end they became a laughing stock with the other teams supporters.
Is there any recent projected signing that has actually arrived and stayed at Eastbourne? All the other clubs tend to keep quiet until they have made the signings.  Iwould prefer it if the Eastbourne promotion did the same.

I agree with and applaud the cynicism shown by you all....

It's a joke... and I'm just about fed up with being treated like an idiot...

Were we ever really chasing Walasek?

If so.... wouldn't his availability have been just about the first thing to be checked?.... certainly before terms were (apparently) agreed!!

What's the point in wasting 5 weeks waiting for an answer when the guy aint gonna be available anyway?

Im struggling to understand how 2 blokes who've been involved in the sport for decades could be so incompetent and therefore I have to conclude that maybe someone has been less than candid with us.

And now.... are we really "in talks" with Mikael Max?

Come on Bob/Trevor.... remember the boy who cried Wolf....

If we don't have a new signing in place by the time of our next meeting at Belle Vue on 20th July then as far as I'm concerned the whole lot of em can go take a jump.

As I say.... I've had more than enough of being taken for a ride.

This could be a really sad way for the Dugard era to end at Arlington.

At times it's been glorious but unfortunately it's ending as a shambles.

Rye House here I come......

COUS , i hope sincerely to see rye house next season --- at arlington in the premier league . understand and agree with you , we all re-act differently and have our own hopes and despairs ,  i am sure many disagree with me , but we want our eagles to continue . we have that in common at least .i too often " go off on one" , we all have different tolerance levels and opinions , but as i have said , we all want the same thing in the end . have to admire the stoicism of so many of you . may our dreams come true .  we deserve it after these last three seasons . the thought of martin contiuing the dugard line is truly inspiring --- please let this at least be true .

Ok ray..... I'm ready for you (or anyone else) to convince me why I should keep coming back for more of the same old tosh.... at (I might add) a cost of over £50 a meeting.... (I'd save about £15 a go at Rye House).

What were we told at the beginning of the season....?

"We've learnt the lessons of last year and wont be repeating the same mistakes again".....

What's been the reality....

Exactly the same dithering.... exactly the same inactivity.... exactly the same incompetence.... exactly the same hope then disappointment.... exactly the same good start fizzling out to nothing.... exactly the same unfulfilled promises.... exactly the same months of R/R.... exactly the same uninspiring team management....etc etc etc.... as last year.

Now.... if Mikael Max (or a comparable alternative) is in the team by Belle Vue on 20th July fair enough..... although I'd still want to know why it took 10 weeks.

But, from recent experience, would you really say that the chances of that happening are any better than 50/50?

This Walasek nonsense is just about the last straw.

i know COUS  , feel the same , maybe you keep going back , i and others i won't name , haven't .last time 16th may v wolves .mind you i couldnt come in june coz of holiday and the heart operation my wife had to have out there . speedway is trivial compared to her .but i didnot want to go for all the reasons you said anyway . out of the house for almost six hours , all that travelling for what ?! there hasn't been a full or proper eagles team since before i stopped . i won't travel and pay to see second rate guests . do hope to go to ipswich match to see various friends again , but this depends on the afore mentioned reasons .
still hope for what i wrote in my earlier post though .
what a condemnation from Meridian . says it all . now poole will get special permission to sign boxall , though his true average is too high .enough !!!

Guys... just a wee history lesson. Those of you who were there for the season that was 1983 will know what I am on about... the non show of Kelly Moran and Ron Preston... remember that? That was a season of guest after guest and rider replacements..... oh and crap reserves too. But Between Woodsy and Esky made the season worthwhile. I am not saying what happened was right but too have a guest lined up for your No 1 for a whole season was at best cack too.

The fact of the matter is... we are not in new terroritory here as far a getting suitable riders in place quickly. All I can say is that since then, there has certainly been more highs than lows at Arlington...... and one thing is for sure where Bobs concerned theres always a lot of talking points and never a dull moment. Dont suppose Nano Rhigetto is still available is he??

We will win the league next year .... winks and taps nose in an old sage fashion!!

Yes GazzaH.... I was there in 1983.... and just as a matter of accuracy.... Woodsy was our no.1 that year, Esky rode at no.3, (and both were terrific) and we had special dispensation for a guest at no.5 only because the yanks let us down at the last minute.

But no matter how bad that season was results wise I always had the feeling that everyone connected with the club was giving 110% to make the absolute best of a rotten situation.

That's all I'm asking for.... everyone to give it their all.... but I think it's patently obvious that we haven't been getting it for the last 3 seasons.

And by the way.... anyone notice that 10 points from Troy Batchelor inspired Ipswich to a last heat decider at Coventry tonight.

Why didn't we try to get Troy in at Arlington?

Oh yeah... it was because we were waiting for an answer from a rider who was never going to be able to ride for us.

Yes but COUS... Woodsy started that season as our third heat leader on something like a 7.5 average! but he rose to the challenge and finished as a number 1!!  Esky came in as a second string from Brum and excelled into a heat leader.... yet again, had the whole team turned up that was on paper we would have been a terrific proposition!!

Absolutely GazzaH.... but I think the point I'm trying to make is that the result is not always the be all and end all.

Sometimes, as in 1983, a real spirit of togetherness can be built up out of adversity.

But I do expect everyone to give of their best at all times and I don't think that's been happening for the last 3 years.

In 1983 we had a team thrown together at the last minute who  pulled together, made the absolute best of their ability and probably over achieved.

In the last 2 years we've had teams that have looked good on paper.... started the season on fire.... but for whatever reason fell apart and probably under achieved.

Cant argue with any of your last there COUS...bang on the money as far as commitment from that team goes.  More recently, yes we won the Knockout Cup last season but... had that same level been shown all the way through last year, could we or, should we  have won the league as well????

I dont know why when it comes to Eastbourne (less so whilst Cookie was here) that there seems to be some sort of obstruction getting suitable replacements in quickly. I know or I should say Bob, appears to be very loyal to riders such as Floppy, whereas Ford over at Poole is not. I wonder, do the riders at Poole think any less of Matt Ford as the current crop do of Bob.

The current will he wont he sign situation with Walasek... for me he is a gater, terrific if he makes it, not so special if he dont, so for me, I hope he doesnt sign. I would much sooner we got Max instead. I mentioned Righetto in jest earlier, if we are determined to get a Pole in... how about Robert Slabon..... ooooh be still my beating heart.

Agree with you again GazzaH that Max would probably be a better signing than Walasek.....

But will it ever happen or is it just another smoke screen?
We'll wait and see.....

And on the subject of Robert Slabon..... Ok, maybe he was never a prolific points scorer in Eagles colours..... but once again..... there haven't been many who've tried harder.

If one or two of the "prima donnas" we've had in the team over the last few years had put in the same level of effort as Robert we probably wouldn't be in the state we're in now.
